Eugene B. “Gene” Chadwick played three sports – football, basketball and baseball – during his storied tenure at Mississippi State from 1924-27.
Chadwick was the son of W.D. Chadwick, who served as MSU’s athletic director from 1909-1930. While in Starkville, the younger Chadwick lettered in football and basketball before beginning his own coaching legacy.
Chadwick began his coaching career as an assistant football coach at MSU in 1928-29 before going to the high school ranks at Greenwood High School where he went 11-0-0 in his first season in 1930 with 405 total points scored. He also coached at Laurel High School in 1945 before returning to the college ranks at Delta State.
The Starkville native served as the head football coach and athletic director for the Statesmen from 1947-60 and rebuilt the athletics program following World War II. He was credited with bringing the split-T formation to Delta State and produced the program’s first undefeated team in 1954.
Chadwick produced a 67-46-1 record as Delta State’s head football coach where he produced three All-Americans and led the Statesmen to victory in the 1959 Christmas Bowl.
Chadwick was inducted into the Delta State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1972, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1973 and the Mississippi State Hall of Fame in 1974.
