Erwin "Buddy" Elrod played for the then Maroons, becoming the first consensus All-American in Mississippi State football history. Elrod was named the Southeastern Conference Most Valuable Player in 1940.
Erwin "Buddy" Elrod lettered in Football from 1937 to 1940. In his final season in Starkville, Elrod help guide the Maroons to a undefeated 10-0-1 season, where State concluded their season ranked ninth and earned a 14-7 victory against 13th-ranked Georgetown in the Orange Bowl.
Elrod earned All-SEC honors three times, as he was named to the First Team in 1940 and to the second team after the 1938 and 1939 seasons. He was inducted to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.
Elrod joined the Air Force and fought in World War II.
