Elmo Branch

Elmo Branch was a three-year letterwinner in basketball along with track and field from 1950-51 to 1952-53.
Branch competed in the high jump, pole vault, broad jump, high hurdles and low hurdles. He was State’s first track and field athlete to capture multiple SEC titles when he won the high jump and pole vault in 1952.
Branch established a conference record in the high jump which enabled him the opportunity to participate at the 1952 United States Olympic Trials where he placed sixth serving as an Olympic alternate.
His daughter, Polly Branch Pund, was inducted into State’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 after a standout basketball career from 1982-83 to 1986-87 where she became the first player in program history to score over 1,500 points.
Branch, a Duck Hill, Mississippi native, served his country in the United States Air Force. He passed away in 2014.
