One of the great mutli-purpose players in Mississippi State football history, Dave Marler started for the Bulldogs from 1977-78.
Marler began his career at State as a kicker and tied the school record with 13 field goals in 1977, notching a career-high 50-yarder against Memphis State.
His senior year, he transitioned to the quarterback position, where he had one of the most prolific seasons of any signal-caller in MSU history.
In 1978, Marler completed 163 passes for 2,422 yards – which was then a school record – and 11 touchdowns. He threw for over 200 yards in six different games, setting a program record with 429 yards against Alabama. He threw three touchdown passes in wins over No. 15 Florida State and Tennessee, as well as two scoring tosses in a victory over No. 17 LSU.
Marler was named First Team All-SEC quarterback and Honorable Mention All-American in 1978. He set 19 school records during his time in the Maroon and White.
He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 1979 NFL Draft before playing four seasons in the Canadian Football League.
