Commodore S. Cochran
- Induction:
- 1997
- Class:
- 1924
Commodore Scott (C.S.) Cochran starred at Mississippi State from 1919-1923 and was a two-time champion in the National Intercollegiate quarter mile run. A staple on the 1600-meter relay for Mississippi State, at the time named Mississippi A&M, Cochran prided himself on “pulling the relay race out of the fire” for his team.
Cochran ran the leadoff leg for the United States’ 4x400m relay team that set a new world record at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. As the first Bulldog to win a gold medal for Mississippi State, trackside media reportedly clocked his first leg as an unofficial world record time over 400m.
He was the second 400m champion in NCAA history and helped the program to a national runner-up finish at the 1923 championships. After graduation, Cochran competed for the Olympic Club of San Francisco.
