Carl Maddox served as athletic director at Mississippi State from 1979-84.
Maddox arrived in Starkville after serving as a successful AD at LSU for 11 years. He began his professional career coaching football at three different schools in Mississippi – the Gulf Coast Military Academy in Gulfport, Greenwood High School and Greenville High School.
After working in various capacities at LSU over the course of 25 years, Maddox returned to Mississippi to lead the athletic department at MSU.
During his time at State, Maddox was best known for improving a plethora of athletic facilities. These included the construction of new track and tennis complexes, adding lights to practice fields and the expansion of Scott Field.
Larry Templeton, who served as an assistant AD under Maddox before taking over the athletic department himself and being inducted into the M-Club Hall of Fame, described Maddox as “the most lovable individual I’ve ever been associated with.”
The track and field complex at MSU is named in Maddox’s honor. He was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 and the LSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.
