Brantley Jones is regarded as one of the best pitchers to wear the M over S uniform. From 1967 to 1970, Jones cemented himself as the ace of the Bulldog staff early in his career. Amassing a 27-8 record over 257 innings, he was named All-SEC Western Division three times and was named SEC Pitcher of the Year in 1970. Â
Jones was incredibly efficient on the mound for the Bulldogs in each of the four years he lettered. He led the team in strikeouts, innings pitched and ERA in multiple seasons. He has also set tournament records at the collegiate level. Â
The 1970 season was nothing short of perfect for Jones. He led Paul Gregory’s team to a 1970 SEC Championship win and went 9-0 on the mound that season with a 1.51 ERA. He struck out 55 batters in 77 innings pitched. His performance during his final season on the diamond placed him at the top of SEC record books in wins and innings pitched. The 1970 season concluded in Mississippi State’s longest NCAA tournament run up to that point. Â
The 1970 season was full of many memorable moments by Jones, but none rival his 3-0 shutout victory against Ole Miss to clinch the 1970 Western Division championship. In the final series of the regular season, Jones held an absolute masterclass. He allowed only six hits in the outing, besting the Rebels in legendary fashion. Â
Jones and his wife, Cam, dated throughout his time at Mississippi State before getting married. The couple has a daughter, Bridges, and two grandchildren. Their eldest grandson, Brantley Martin, attends Mississippi State. Jones still cheers for the Bulldogs when he has the opportunity. Â
