Matt Dunaway completed his fourth season as Mississippi State’s Director of Communications and his eighth season as the primary contact for the men’s basketball program led by Chris Jans in 2025-26.
Dunaway was elevated to his current title in July 2022 and possesses over two decades of experience in the media relations field highlighted by 15 years inside the Southeastern Conference.
At State, Dunaway has overseen the successful promotion of four NCAA Tournament squads and numerous marque athletes. Reggie Perry, Tolu Smith III, Quinndary Weatherspoon and Robert Woodard II have gone onto to play in the NBA with Perry being named the 2020 SEC Co-Player of the Year by the Associated Press.
The Bulldogs have had seven players eclipse 1,000 career points during Dunaway’s tenure and at least one All-SEC selection in eight straight seasons, most recently Josh Hubbard in 2025-26. He also promoted Hubbard’s accomplishments off the court as the 2026 Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup national recipient for his exceptional leadership, his character and his commitment to community service.
Dunaway has previously worked at Houston, Rice, LSU and Texas Tech. The Red Raiders made the 2018 NCAA Elite Eight on a team that featured Keenan Evans, an All-Big 12 First-Team honoree, along with future NBA Draft lottery picks Jarrett Culver and Zhaire Smith.
Dunaway has had the opportunity to work with NCAA Final Four head coaches Chris Beard, Ben Howland and Tubby Smith over his 11 seasons as a men’s basketball contact. He also worked with AVCA Hall of Fame coach Fran Flory [volleyball] and NFCA Hall of Fame coach Yvette Girouard [softball] while at LSU.
Prior to his time working men’s basketball, Dunaway publicized 12 All-Americans which include A.J. Andrews [LSU – Softball], Bianka Bell [LSU – Softball], Brittnee Cooper [LSU – Volleyball], Sam Dabbs [LSU – Volleyball], Rachele Fico [LSU – Softball], Briana Holman [LSU – Volleyball], Brittany Mack [LSU – Softball], Angel Shamblin [Houston – Softball], Kirsten Shortridge [LSU – Softball], Marina Skender [LSU – Volleyball], Jessica Valis [Houston – Softball] and Laurie Wagner [Houston – Softball].
Dunaway, a 2005 graduate of UCF’s Nicholson School of Communication, earned his Bachelor of Arts in broadcast journalism. He worked as a student assistant in the sports information office and held sports director duties for the student chapter of the UCF ISP Sports Network.
Dunaway is a member of College Sports Communicators.
