Dr. Brent Fountain joined Mississippi State University in September 1999, and serves as Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR). Named by President Mark Keenum to the position in July 2020, Dr. Fountain plays a strategic role at the university, ensuring the academic integrity of the intercollegiate athletics program, facilitating institutional control of intercollegiate athletics, and enhancing the student-athlete experience. As FAR, he serves as representative to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and NCAA.
Beyond his duties as FAR, Dr. Fountain serves as Vice Provost in the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President and is an Extension Professor of Nutrition in the Department of Food Science, Nutrition, and Health Promotion. Dr. Fountain is a past president of the MSU Robert Holland Faculty Senate and previously served as Human Nutrition Specialist for the Mississippi State University Extension Service, before beginning his current position.
Dr. Fountain is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian in the state of Mississippi. His areas of expertise include childhood and adolescent overweight and obesity, nutrition and food access in limited resource and rural communities and sports dietetics. Dr. Fountain is a past president of the Mississippi Dietetic Association and a fellow in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
A native of Natchez Mississippi, Dr. Fountain holds an Associate of Arts degree from East Central Community College, Bachelor of Science degrees from Mississippi College and Mississippi State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Human Nutrition from Mississippi State University. He is also a 2015 graduate of the International Olympic Committee’s Diploma in Sports Nutrition, and Dietetics.
He is married to Amy, and the two have two sons- Jack and Joe.
