Tevin Baskin is back on Ben Howland’s staff as the program’s director of scouting and analytics for the 2021-22 season. He enters his third season overall at Mississippi State after he served as a graduate assistant in 2018-19 and 2019-20.
In his current role, Baskin will oversee the program’s video operations and statistical metrics along with assisting the coaching staff with the development of scouting reports. Previously, he played a vital part in assisting with player development and opponent scouting during his graduate assistant tenure.
The Bulldogs posted consecutive 20-plus win seasons and made a 2019 NCAA Tournament appearance. Mississippi State also captured 10-plus SEC victories in back-to-back seasons for the first time dating back to the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons. State claimed the program’s best finish SEC regular season finish in 2019-20 in nearly a decade.
The Bulldogs had a trio of players selected in the NBA Draft with Baskin as a graduate assistant: Quinndary Weatherspoon (2019 • San Antonio Spurs), Reggie Perry (2020 • Brooklyn Nets) and Robert Woodard II (2020 • Sacramento Kings). Recently, the trio was joined by Tyson Carter (Miami Heat), Aric Holman (Boston Celtics), Lamar Peters (Philadelphia 76ers) and D.J. Stewart Jr. (Miami Heat) in the 2021 NBA Summer League. Baskin worked with all seven players at one point as a graduate assistant.
Prior to returning to Starkville, Baskin spent the 2020-21 campaign as an assistant coach under Eric Eaton at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont. He worked as an assistant coach at Bridgewater College under Shawn Postiglione in Virginia during the 2017-18 season leading into his first stop at Mississippi State.
Baskin embarked on his collegiate coaching career in 2016-17 at Northwest Florida State College under Steve DeMeo, where he worked with the wings and post players. The Raiders were ranked No. 1 in the Sporting News Junior College preseason poll, won the Panhandle Conference championship and made a trip to the NJCAA Final Four. The program also put together the first undefeated conference season in school history. Baskin had five players from his team advance to Division I careers in Daryl Edwards (LSU, UTEP), Andres Feliz (Illinois), Jeremy Rodriguez (East Tennessee State), Andrew Gordon (West Virginia) and Malik Petteway (Robert Morris).
A standout small forward at Trinity Catholic High School in Connecticut, Baskin led his team to a combined 102-12 record over his four years. He finished his high school career third on his school’s all-time scoring list with 1,869 points. Baskin, a three-time All-State selection, was rated as a top 50 player at his position by ESPN.com and was selected to play in the Jordan Brand Classic Regional All-Star Game at Madison Square Garden in New York City as a senior.
Baskin’s ties to the northeast extend to the legendary New York Gauchos AAU Basketball Program as a player from 2003-09 under Dwayne Mitchell and Ron Hawkins. The program won the prestigious Peach Jam Tournament in 2007. Notable players that Baskin played with during his time with the Gauchos include future NBA players Kemba Walker, Kyrie Irving, Russ Smith, Doron Lamb and Durand Scott.
Baskin’s collegiate career began with one-season stops at Quinnipiac and Chipola College where he helped the squad to a 26-3 mark. Chipola was a NJCAA preseason top 5 squad and qualified for the national junior college tournament during his sophomore season.
Baskin completed his college career at Appalachian State where he played in all 31 games and amassed double figures 18 times as a junior. His senior season was highlighted by a 24-point performance against Atlantic Coast Conference foe North Carolina State in 2013-14. The Connecticut native had the opportunity to play two seasons of professional basketball with Choriceros De Camargo in Mexico following his time at Appalachian State.
Baskin is the son of Yolanda Baskin and Donald Alexander. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in communication studies with a minor in sociology from Appalachian State in 2014, and his master’s degree in workforce education leadership from Mississippi State in 2020.
