Michael Moynihan is in the midst of his second stint on Mississippi State’s staff, his fourth season as director of operations and his fifth season overall under Ben Howland in 2020-21. He is involved in all facets of the program and has already has acquired seven years of experience at the Division I level.
Moynihan previously served as the program’s video coordinator in 2015-16 and the director of operations during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. He was named as one of only 25 people to the Division I Top Staffers List produced by CoachStat.net.
Last season, Mississippi State secured its third consecutive 20-plus win campaign and the program’s best SEC regular season finish since 2010-11. Moynihan’s first tenure with the Bulldogs was highlighted by a 25-win season and a trip to the 2018 NIT Final Four.
In between his MSU stints, Moynihan spent the 2018-19 season as an assistant coach at UNC Asheville under Mike Morrell where he was listed among the nation’s top 10 mid-major assistant coaching tandems with R.J. Evans.
Prior to making the move to the SEC, Moynihan worked as the director of operations at George Mason under Paul Hewitt in 2014-15 and the video coordinator at Troy under Phil Cunningham in 2013-14.
Moynihan’s first assistant coaching position was at Young Harris College in Georgia at the Division II level. The Mountain Lions turned in a 17-9 record and captured a second-place finish in their division during the 2012-13 season.
Moynihan began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at North Georgia, his alma mater, in addition to being an assistant coach at Buford High School in Georgia.
The grandson of 2007 College Basketball Hall of Fame and 2018 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Charles "Lefty" Driesell, Moynihan split his collegiate playing career between Georgia State and North Georgia. He came away with a 2010 All-Peach Belt selection during his senior season at North Georgia under Chris Faulkner.
Moynihan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in management from North Georgia in 2010.
