An opportunity to return to the SEC was one Collin Crane couldn't pass up as he embarks on his fifth season as Mississippi State’s strength and conditioning coach for men’s basketball in 2021-22.
The Bulldogs have averaged 21.5 wins over the last four years, fueled by three consecutive bids to postseason play when postseason tournaments have been played. Overall, schools have amassed 23.3 victories over a nine-year span with Crane associated with its strength and conditioning program.
Mississippi State has three players on NBA rosters which include Reggie Perry (Brooklyn Nets), Quinndary Weatherspoon (San Antonio Spurs) and Robert Woodard II (Sacramento Kings). The Bulldogs also had a trio of 1,000-point scorers in Tyson Carter (Greece), Aric Holman (Germany) and Lamar Peters (Turkey) playing overseas during the 2020-21 season.
Crane was one of the first strength coaches to partner with Mississippi State’s Athlete Engineering Program. The multidisciplinary research collaboration between the university’s academic and athletic departments explores human performance, processes and analysis. Since the initiative started, Crane has co-authored multiple peer-reviewed studies on various topics which include force plate analysis and wearable technology in addition to basketball shoe design and assessment.
Prior to joining Ben Howland’s staff, Crane served in the same capacity at Chattanooga in 2015-16 and 2016-17 under Matt McCall. The Mocs compiled 48 victories over his two seasons highlighted by a 29-6 mark en route to the 2016 Southern Conference regular season and tournament titles along with a NCAA Tournament berth.
Crane also gained experience at Missouri State where he worked with men's basketball, tennis and golf programs in 2014-15. Before Missouri State, he was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Florida during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.
The Gators posted a 65-11 record with Billy Donovan at the helm during his time in Gainesville. Florida made runs to 2013 NCAA Elite Eight and 2014 NCAA Final Four. He organized NBA Draft training regiments for standouts such as Bradley Beal, Chandler Parsons, Eric Murphy and Patric Young.
Crane is a certified specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA). In addition, he also is fully trained and certified in the Biosignature Modulation Level I program, an integrated system to track an athlete's body composition and nutritional needs.
Crane earned his Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science from Carson-Newman in 2013 and his Master of Science degree in food science, nutrition and health promotion from Mississippi State in 2020.
Crane played collegiately at Carson-Newman where he was a four-year starter and three-time captain. He also served as a strength and conditioning intern at Florida between his junior and senior semesters. Upon graduation, the university announced the Collin Crane Leadership Award in his honor.
