- Title:
- Offensive Quality Control
As quality control on the offensive side of the ball, MSU shattered team school records for passing yards, passing yards per game, completion percentage and 100-yard receiving games in 2015. The squad reached a bowl game for a school-record sixth consecutive season and won at least eight games for the fourth time in six years while playing in college football's toughest division.
The 2015 MSU special teams also tied the 2014 school record for blocked kicks with four, which ranked sixth nationally.
A native of Annapolis, Md., Vollono supervised the Bulldogs’ 2014 unit that led the Southeastern Conference in kickoff coverage with a 41.9 net average. MSU ranked 14th nationally in kickoff return defense, allowing only 17.9 yards per return.
In addition, place kicker Evan Sobiesk became a scoring weapon, drilling 12-of-14 field goal attempts and shattering the school record for point after conversions with 56. The Bulldogs spent five weeks ranked No. 1 nationally for the first time in program history, while reaching their first Orange Bowl since 1941.
Vollono joined Dan Mullen’s staff in June 2013 and worked with special teams in his first season as MSU won the Liberty Bowl.
Prior to MSU, Vollono was a special teams assistant at Colorado in 2012. While there, punter Darragh O’Neill ranked third in the Pac-12 and in the top 20 nationally in net punting with a 44.1 average.
Vollono coached at Towson from 2009-11, working with special teams, tight ends and running backs. In his final season of 2011, the Tigers captured the Colonial Athletic Association conference and reached the second round of the FCS playoffs. Towson ranked seventh nationally in kickoff returns (24.3 ypr) and 19th in punt coverage (4.9 ypr).
Vollono got his start in the coaching profession as a special teams assistant at the United States Naval Academy in 2003. He also has experience as a recruiter.
He is a 2003 graduate of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
