Homan To Defend State Amateur Title This Weekend At Dancing Rabbit

Homan captured the 2005 crown with an 8-under par round of 64 during the final round at the Hattiesburg Country Club course. If the Fulton, Miss. native can take home top-honors again it will mark the third time he has won the State Amateur. Homan also won the 1994 edition of the Amateur.
The MSU coach will have three members of his Bulldog golf squad competing in the event. Rising seniors Jake Lambert and Josh Oller will vie for the title this week along with upcoming sophomore Matt Fast. Lambert and Oller finished 22nd and fourth respectively in the 2005 championship. Fast, who led the 2005 State Amateur after 36 holes, finished two shots back of Homan last year to place second in the field.
Former MSU golfers Joe Iupe, who lettered at MState from 1975-78 and Benji Nelson, who played at State from 1990-92 are among the 156 players in the field. Iupe, who resides in Madison, Miss. was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame this past year.
Homan will begin his quest for his third State Am crown with a 2 p.m. tee time from No. 10. Lambert will tee off at 12:30 p.m., while Oller and Nelson will be in the same group which will tee off at 1:40 p.m.
Results from each round will be posted on the Mississippi Golf Association's web site ?€“ www.MissGolf.org.
