Magloire Wins 800, 1500-Meter Runs At Bulldog Invitational

STARKVILLE, Miss. ?€“ Mississippi State University senior Zita Magloire(Tallahassee, Fla.) won the 800- and 1500-meter runs at the MSU-hostedBulldog Invitational and two other Lady Bulldogs met NCAA qualifyingmarks in their respective events on Saturday at W.O. SpencerStadium/Carl Maddox Track.
It was a great day, said MSU head coach Al Schmidt. Zita (Magloire)had a great day. It was great to see Marrissa (Harris) qualify forregionals. We scored a lot of points on both sides and won pretty big.
Magloire ran the 800-meter run in a 2 minutes, 10.83 seconds and posteda personal-best time of 4:34.30 in the 1500-meter run. FreshmanMarrissa Harris (Memphis, Tenn.) qualified for June's NCAA MideastRegional in the 100-meter hurdles. In a second-place finish, Harris rana personal-best 13.92, the fourth-best time in school history. In thewomen's shot put, junior Nicola Wilson (Trenton, N.J.) set her thirdregional mark of the season. Wilson finished third with a throw of 47feet, seven-and-three-quarters inches.
Behind Magloire in the 1500-meter run, junior Liz Grube (Sherwood,Wis.) crossed the tape in 4:37.56. Teammate sophomore Annie Falor(Flagstaff, Ariz.) was fourth (4:41.87). In the 800, sophomore AndreaWahlin (Cold Spring, Minn) posted a second-place finish, running apersonal-best 2:14.20. Freshman Abbey Graham (Pontotoc, Miss.) also rana personal best (2:21.18).
In the 3000-meter run, the Lady Bulldogs had four athletes finish inthe top 10, two in the top five. Junior Joy Griffith (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)took second in 10:13.11, while senior Meggan Hodge (Beaumont, Alberta)was third (10:16.14). Junior Mina Thorstenson (Okauchee, Wis.) andfreshman Michelle Corrigan (Green Bay, Wis.) were sixth (10:21.11) andseventh (10:29.22), respectively.
In the 4x100-meter relay, a quartet of freshmen -- Harris, AntreseBanks (Gloster, Miss.), Gabrielle Dillon (Liberty, Miss.) and JanelleFinley (Mobile, Ala.) finished third, running 46.66. In the 4x400-meterrelay, Banks, sophomore Dominique Rogers (Lafayette, La.), junior JenMcPherson (Nampa, Idaho) and Magloire combined to run 3:52.98 and takefourth. Banks also competed in the 400-meter dash, running apersonal-best 56.65.
Women's high jump action saw senior Jasmine Walls (Picayune, Miss.) tieher personal best in the event, taking second overall with a leap of5-07. Freshman Dot Youmans (Poplarville, Miss.) also tied her personalbest in the event (5-03).
Emily Sanders (Woodstock, Ga.) broke her freshman record in the hammerthrow with a mark of 172-01, the third-best time in school history.Junior Christina Hernandez (Asheville, N.C.) set a personal record inthe event, throwing 144-09. Hernandez also took second in the discus(152-04), while Wilson was eighth (138-01).
In other field events, sophomore Alexandra Rozefort (Montreal, Quebec)competed in the triple jump and long jump. In the triple, Rozefortleaped 39-07 to finish third, while she was ninth in the long jump(17-09). Finley finished fifth in the triple jump with a personal-bestjump of 38-00 ¾ and sixth in the long (18-02¼). Harris took third inthe long jump with a leap of 18-06, while Lauren Johnson (Scottsboro,Ala.) saw her first action of the outdoor season, finishing fifth(18-03¼).
As a team, the Lady Bulldogs scored 165 points, finishing ahead ofLouisiana Tech, who scored 127. Memphis (87), Missouri State (94),Southern Mississippi (61), Alabama (8), Alabama-Huntsville (5) andAlcorn State (4) closed out the teams on the women's side.
Mississippi State returns to action next week, Apr. 5-8 at the 79thClyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.
