MSU Set To Welcome High School Teams Friday, Collegiate Teams Saturday At Bulldog Invitational

STARKVILLE, Miss. ?€“ Mississippi State University's track and fieldsquads return home this weekend to host the Bulldog Invitational atW.O. Spencer Stadium/Carl Maddox Track. High school competition beginsFriday at noon, while collegiate events will take place Saturday from 9a.m. to 4 p.m. Spencer Stadium/Maddox Track is located on LakeviewDrive, between Dudy Noble Field and the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
We've got some good teams coming, said MSU head coach Al Schmidt.It's time some of our athletes had the chance to run open events.It'll be the first chance some of them will have to individuallyqualify for regionals.
In addition to MSU, teams scheduled to compete include Southern Miss,Memphis, Louisiana Tech, Alcorn State, Alabama-Huntsville and MissouriState.
Last weekend at the LSU Tiger Relays, the Bulldogs scored a regionalqualifying mark in the 4x400-meter relay with junior Bruce Davis(Phenix City, Ala.), sophomore all-American Elzie Coleman (Newburgh,N.Y.), junior Ezra Jones (Wildwood, Fla.) and sophomore all-AmericanChris Woods (Atlanta, Ga.) running three minutes, 8.15 seconds. State'ssprint medley also picked up a win over national powerhouse LSU.Coleman, junior Arthur Davis (Mobile, Ala.), Jones and Woods combinedto run 3:19.57 and best LSU four all-Americans and take the meet title.
Junior Wade Martin (Cullman, Ala.), B. Davis, junior Ryan Irwin(Ballwin, Mo.) and sophomore John Brigham (Mobile, Ala.) won thedistance medley relay, running 10:09.13.
Junior Travis McKay (Edmonton, Alberta) ran 9:00.39 to win the men's3000-meter steeplechase and qualify for June's Mideast Regional, whileredshirt freshman Keith Hewlett (Detroit, Mich.) won the B section ofthe long jump with a personal-best leap of 23 feet,10-and-one-quarter-inches. Senior Gedamu Ege (Atlanta, Ga.) competed inhis second 5000-meter run of the season, taking second (15:09.65).
In women's events, the Lady Bulldogs posted wins in the distance medleyrelay, 4x800-meter relay, shot put and hammer. In the DMR, junior JenMcPherson (Nampa, Idaho), freshman Antrese Banks (Gloster, Miss.),sophomore Andrea Wahlin (Cold Spring, Minn.) and senior Zita Magloire(Tallahassee, Fla.) ran 11:36.86, the second-best time in schoolhistory. In the 4x8, McPherson, Wahlin, junior Liz Grube (Sherwood,Wis.) and Magloire set an MSU school record with a time of 8:51.12. Inthe shot put, junior Nicola Wilson (Trenton, N.J.) won with a mark of49-10 ½, while freshman Emily Sanders won the hammer throw (165-03).
