State Golfers Take Second Place Honors At Carter Plantation Intercollegiate

SPRINGFIELD, La. - Mississippi State's men's golf team held on to its second place spot on Tuesday in the final round of the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate. As a team, MSU fired a 300 on the closing day with junior Josh Oller and freshman Carlos Sainz, Jr. recording even-par 72 rounds.
With the finish, the Maroon and White have posted three straight top-5 placements, including seven consecutive top-10 finishes overall. The runner up spot is also a season-best finish for State this season.
Oller finished the 54-hole event in fourth place, a new career-best for the Brandon, Miss. native. Sainz, Jr. posted 8-over par for the two days to finish sixth in the individual field. MSU's Matt Fast was the third Bulldog competitor to post a top-20 finish. Fast fired a final-round 79 to close in a tie for 17th-place. Noah Goldman rounded out the MState scorecard with a 77.
"We played pretty well," said MSU head coach Clay Homan. "We played hard and did some good things on a very tough course to play. This was a good test for us going in to next week at Auburn and the SEC Championship in a couple of weeks."
Host-Southeastern Louisiana claimed team honors with a final-round score of 296. South Alabama finished fourth, while in-state foe Southern Mississippi finished out the top-five squads.
Clubhouse leader after 36 holes, Julian Colmenares of Jacksonville State took home medalist honors at even-par for the two-day event.
MState returns to competition on April 7-9 taking part in the 19th-Annual Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate, hosted by Auburn University at the AU Club.
