State Wins Five Events To Close Out LSU Tiger Relays

We dominated women's middle distance and distance events at thismeet, said MSU head coach Al Schmidt. The women's distance medleyrelay ran 11:36, and that's big time. The men also won the DMR. Ourmen's 4x2 was second to LSU. Our male sprinters held their own againstLSU this weekend. Liz (Grube) won the 1500, Annie (Falor) was secondand Nicola (Wilson) won the shot. It was a great weekend and good day.
Junior Jen McPherson (Nampa, Idaho) led off the distance medley relay.Freshman Antrese Banks (Gloster, Miss.), sophomore Andrea Wahlin (ColdSpring, Minn.) and senior Zita Magloire (Tallahassee, Fla.) followed togive MSU the win in 11 minutes, 36.86 seconds and the second-best timein school history. The men's distance medley relay team of junior WadeMartin (Cullman, Ala.), Bruce Davis (Phenix City, Ala.), Ryan Irwin(Ballwin, Mo.) and John Brigham (Mobile, Ala.) ran 10:09.13 to win themeet title.
In the women's 1500-meter run, junior Liz Grube (Sherwood, Wis.) andAnnie Falor (Flagstaff, Ariz.) each ran personal bests with Gruberunning 4:36.53 to win the meet title and Falor (4:39.08) crossing theline in second-place. Junior Nicola Wilson (Trenton, N.J.) won the shotput title with a throw of 49 feet, 10-and-one half inches.
Sophomore Tim Williams (Pensacola, Fla.) cleared 6-08¾ to win the men'shigh jump title. A pair of freshmen also competed in the event for theBulldogs. Allen Cassell (Port Gibson, Miss.) and Darry Brady(Vancleave, Miss.) leaped 6-04¾ and 6-02¾, respectively.
State's 4x200-meter relay team of junior Eliott Morant (Kansas City,Mo.), sophomore all-American Elzie Coleman (Newburgh, N.Y.), juniorall-American Arthur Davis (Mobile, Ala.) and junior Ezra Jones(Wildwood, Fla.) placed second, running 1:25.18. In the 4x400-meterrelay, B. Davis, Coleman, Jones and sophomore all-American Chris Woods(Atlanta, Ga.) ran a regional-qualifying 3:08.15.
Sophomore Alexandra Rozefort (Montreal, Quebec) set a personal best andmoved up to fourth on the MSU all-time superlatives list in the women'striple jump, leaping 39-09¾. Teammate Janelle Finley, a freshman fromMobile, Ala. was fifth (39-01¾). Junior Christina Hernandez (Asheville,N.C.) set a personal best in the shot, finishing fifth with a 43-10½mark. Freshman Emily Sanders (Woodstock, Ga.) did the same, takingeighth (40-07½).
Freshman Marrissa Harris (Memphis, Tenn.) finished second in thewomen's 100-meter hurdles finals, running 14.12. In the 400-meterhurdles, sophomore Dominique Rogers (Lafayette, La.) placed fifth witha season-best time of 1:06.21. Senior Jasmine Walls (Picayune, Miss.)leaped 5-04¼ to finish in a tie for third in the high jump, whileteammate and freshman Dot Youmans (Poplarville, Miss.) was ninth(5-02½).
In other men's action, senior Gedamu Ege (Atlanta, Ga.) ran 4:21.72 tofinish fifth in the mile run. Jerald Wilson, a junior from Port Gibson,Miss. placed third in the triple jump (47-04½).
Up next for both MSU squads is the Bulldog Invitational at W.O. SpencerStadium/Carl Maddox Track on the Mississippi State campus. High schoolaction begins Friday at noon and collegiate action begins Saturdaymorning at 9 a.m. Admission is free of charge to all MSU home trackmeets.
