Ashley, Lewis Advance On Opening Day Of NCAA Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif.?€“?€“ The 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships gotunderway on Wednesday at the Alex G. Spanos Complex. Mississippi StateUniversity senior all-Americans Jamel Ashley and LaChristopher Lewis advancedin their respective events on the opening day.
"Jamel (Ashley) ran well," said MSU head coach Al Schmidt. "LaChristopher(Lewis) had decent jumps. Just getting through is the main thing. Our goal hereis to have some all-Americans and finish top 20 nationally."
In the 400-meter dash, Ashley finished second in his heat, eighth overall, inthe preliminaries in 46.18. Sophomore all-American Arthur Davis finished 24thoverall in the event.
In the long jump qualifying round, Lewis leaped 24-3 1/2 to finish fourth in hisflight and 10th overall and advance to Thursday's final.
On Thursday, Lewis competes in the long jump final at 9 p.m. CT and theBulldogs' 4x400-meter relay team takes the track for the qualifying round at10:40 p.m. CT.
