MSU's Clay Homan Qualifies For Mississippi State Amateur
The second-year coach fired a 72 in the qualifying round on Monday at the Hattiesburg CC course. Homan is no stranger to the State Amateur Championship setting. The Fulton, Miss. native captured the 1994 State Amateur Title at Colonial Country Club at Deerfield.
Homan will be joined in the field by two current Bulldog golfers and an in-coming signee. Sophomore Josh Oller will be competing for the third consecutive year. In 2004, the Brandon, Miss. product placed fifth in the final standings. He placed 25th in the 2003 State Championship. MSU's Jake Lambert will also vie for the crown this week in the Hub City.
Matt Fast, who signed with the Maroon and White last fall, will be playing in the 72-hole, four-day event in his hometown. Fast won the Mississippi Class 5A State Championship this past spring. He will be playing with Oller in the first two rounds of competition.
The tournament is a 72-hole stroke format. The field will be trimmed to 60 players after 36 holes of play. The last time the event was held at Hattiesburg CC was in 1987.
Results of the State Amateur will be posted daily after conclusion of each round on the Mississippi Golf Association's web site www.missgolf.org.
