BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ?€“?€“ Mississippi State University's track and field squad inched closer to the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday. The Bulldogs' 4x100-meter relay and three individuals qualified for event finals on the opening day of the NCAA Mideast Regional. The event is being held at the Robert C. Haugh Track Complex on the Indiana University campus.
Junior Steve Mullings and sophomore all-American Arthur Davis were scheduled to compete in the 200-meter dash. Senior all-American LaChristopher Lewis advanced to the finals of the long jump competition prior to action being suspended due to inclement weather. The events will resume on Saturday morning.
State's 4x100-meter relay team of senior all-American Jamel Ashley, Mullings, Davis and Lewis ran 39.73 seconds to qualifying for Saturday's final.
Mullings qualified for the 100-meter dash finals with a time of 10.42 seconds, while Ashley and Davis ran 46.01 and 46.64 respectively to advance to the finals of the 400-meter dash.
Freshman Elzie Coleman ran 46.79 in the 400 and freshman Chris Woods clocked 1:58.72 in the 800-meter run.
On the women's side, senior Crystal Averitt competed in the hammer, finishing 20th with a throw of 169-5.
