Mullings Edges Willie For 200-Meter Title At LSU Alumni Gold
BATON ROUGE, La. ?€“?€“ Mississippi State University junior Steve Mullings clocked 20.45 seconds in the 200-meter dash to take the meet title at the LSU Alumni Gold meet on Saturday in Baton Rouge, La. The mark is a season best by a Bulldog, a personal best for the Perth Town, Jamaica native and the fourth fastest regional qualifying time posted in the event this season.
"This was a good tune-up meet for the Penn Relays," said MSU head coach Al Schmidt. "Steve (Mullings) put up a great performance. Zita (Magloire) ran well and overall it was a good average day for us. That's what we wanted heading into next week."
In the 400-meter dash, the Bulldogs posted three regional qualifying marks with senior all-American LaChristopher Lewis finishing second in 46.53. He was followed by senior all-American Jamel Ashley in fourth (46.57) and sophomore all-American Arthur Davis in seventh (47.07).
The Bulldogs set a bevy of personal records at the meet, including freshman Chris Woods running a season best 1:52.90 in the 800-meter run. In the 1500-meter run, junior Matt Martin (4:10.81) and freshman Robert Scribner (4:15.15) set personal best in the event. Joseph Queen cleared a season and personal best 14-9 in the pole vault and Austin Golding set a PR in the javelin (166-09).
On the women's side, senior Jennifer Johnstone set a personal best in the hammer with a throw of 172-04. The mark ranks second on MSU's all-Time Superlatives list.
In the 800-meter run, junior Zita Magloire was the third collegiate finisher, seventh overall, in 2:13.76. Magloire also finished seventh, fourth among collegiate competitors, in the 1500-meter run with a personal best 4:34.49.
Angelica Phillips and Annie Falor set personal best in the 200-meter dash and 800-meter run, respectively.
State returns to action Thursday through Saturday at the 111th running of the Penn Relay Carnival in Philadelphia, Pa.
