Bulldogs Inch Closer To Top Ten In Latest Trackwire 25
STARKVILLE, Miss. ?€“ The Mississippi State University men's outdoor track andfield team climbed one spot to 11th in this week's Trackwire 25. Through April17th, the Bulldogs have 12 marks ranked among the top 20 in six events.
"We're proud of the ranking," said MSU head coach Al Schmidt. "We're close tothe top 10, and we're only going to get better. We'll see where they put usafter LSU and the Penn Relays."
At the MSU-hosted 10th annual Jace Lacoste Invitational this past weekend, JamelAshley, a senior all-American, won the 400-meter dash in 45.69, a regionalqualifying mark and meet record. All-Americans sophomore Arthur Davis (3rd,46.17) and senior LaChristopher Lewis (4th, 46.40) both met regional qualifyingmarks in the event, as well.
In addition, Lewis met a regional qualifying mark in the 200-meter dash, takingthe meet title in 21.06. Davis finished second in the event (21.23). The4x400-meter relay team of freshman Adian Sanderson, freshman Chris Woods,freshman Elzie Coleman and junior Kendall Pyant II met a regional mark, winningthe race in 3:09.44.
State swept the top three spots in the 1500-meter run with sophomore TravisMcKay (3:54.41) taking top honors. Sophomore Brandon Smith (3:59.60) andfreshman John Brigham (3:59.74) were second and third, respectively. SeniorGedamu Ege won the 5000-meter run in 15:02.01, while freshman Robert Scribnerwas third (15:33.42).
Senior high jumper Matt Denton cleared a personal best 7-0 1/2 en route towinning the meet title.
The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs return to action on Saturday at the LSU AlumniGold meet in Baton Rouge, La.
