MSU Golfers Eighth After First Round Of SEC Championship
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. ?€“ Mississippi State's men's golf team opened the 2005 Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championship with an opening round 303. The Bulldogs stand in eighth after Friday's round at the par-70 Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club. The Maroon and White sit just five shots out of fifth heading into the weekend.
MSU was led by senior Joe Deraney's three-over par 73. He heads into the weekend tied for 11th. Deraney sits just five shots off the leader going into Saturday's action. His round on Friday included two birdies and 12 pars. Sophomore Josh Oller turned in a five-over par 75 in the first round. The Brandon, Miss. product currently stands in 22nd on the individual leaderboard. Freshman Michael Knight carded a 76, finishing the day in a six-way toe for 32nd. Tim Satow finished up the State scorecard with a 79. Sophomore Jake Lambert concluded day one of the Championship with an 82.
On a tough day for low numbers, only two players in the field posted a round under par. Georgia's Scott Richard carded a two-under par 68 to lead all individuals. Kentucky's John Holmes fired a one-under par 69.
Kentucky registered the low-round of the day with a 290. The Wildcats hold a four-shot advantage over Florida and a five-shot lead over Alabama. The Tigers of Auburn, followed by South Carolina and Tennessee round out the top-five teams on the leaderboard.
State will begin second-round action at 8:50 ET. They will be paired with Georgia and Arkansas.
