Mullings Named SEC Runner Of The Week
STARKVILLE, Miss. ?€“?€“ Mississippi State University track and field standout Steve Mullings has been named the Southeastern Conference Runner of the Week as announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon. The award follows Mullings' impressive performance at the 78th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
"This is a good honor for Steve," said MSU associate head coach Steve Dudley. "He had a good weekend at Texas. He got a lot of support from his teammates in the relay events."
In Austin, Mullings' 10.06 time in the 100-meter dash final ties his personal best set at the MSU-hosted Bulldog Invitational. The regional qualifying mark ranks as the third fastest in school history and is the fastest regional qualifying time posted in the NCAA this season.
The mark breaks a Texas Relays record held since 1976 by Ed Preston of Arkansas State. The time also ties the Myers Stadium record set last season by Tyson Gay, a former teammate of Mullings at Barton Co. (Kansas) CC.
The 4x200-meter relay team of Mullings, senior all-American Jamel Ashley, sophomore all-American Arthur Davis and senior all-American LaChristopher Lewis won in 1 minute, 21.62 seconds.
The third-place 4x100 team of sophomore Eliott Morant, Ashley, Mullings and Lewis finished in a regional qualifying and season best 39.09. The mark ties a two-year old school record set in 2003 by Lewis, Marquis Davis, Glenn McFadden and Pierre Browne.
"It's great to get this honor," Mullings said. "This was my third time to compete at Texas, and I've never lost there. I'm running the 400 this weekend at home. I'm trying to get some strength to run the 200. I'm hoping to finish in at least 47 seconds."
Mullings and the MSU track and field teams return home this weekend to host the Jace Lacoste Invitational at W.O. Spencer Stadium/Carl Maddox Track.
