Bulldog Golfers Finish Fourth At LSU Spring Invitational

BATON ROUGE, La. ?€“ Mississippi State fired a two-over par 290 on the final day to finish the LSU Spring Invitational tied for fourth with the University of Texas-Arlington. The finish marks the third time the Bulldogs have placed in the top-five this season. MSU was in ninth after the first two days of the 54-hole event at The University Club in Baton Rouge, La. State and the Mavericks finished one shot out of third place.
The Maroon and White only had to count one score over par on Sunday. Three Bulldogs carded even-par rounds of 72. State was led by senior Joe Deraney, who finished one shot out of the top-10. He finished the tournament with a three-round score of 220. The Statesboro, Ga. native posted rounds of 77, 71 and 72. He has placed in the top-20 in seven of the eight tournaments this season. Sophomore Josh Oller moved to 29th on the final day with his even-par scorecard. Jake Lambert also finished the day with a 72 and placed 36th in the field. Freshman Michael Knight finished up the scoring for State with a two-over-par 74. He finished in the 46th position. Senior Tim Satow registered a 77 to finish 42nd.
We played more consistent from top to bottom today, said MSU head coach Clay Homan. It was good to get three even par scores on the final day with the tough pin placements.
LSU won the team title for the fifth consecutive season. The homestanding Tigers finished the event at one-over-par. Lamar turned in the round of the day with a 281 to finish second. The Gamecocks of Jacksonville State took home third-place honors.
LSU's Beck Troutman held on to his 36-hole lead to capture the individual crown. The Parklane Academy product finished the tournament with a two-under-par 70.
We need to improve our short game heading into the final two tournaments of the season, said Homan. The key is to finish strong on the final day and I thought we did that today.
The Bulldogs return to the course next weekend, April 8-10 at the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate in Auburn, Ala.
