Lady Bulldogs Down Trojans In Fifth Shutout Of The Season
Head coach Tracy Lane broke the MSU women's tennis career coaching wins record with the win. Lane broke the record previously held by Andy Jackson with her 69 wins.
The Lady Bulldogs swept the Trojans in doubles play, winning the first point of the match. MSU's 32nd ranked tandem of Zsuzsanna Fodor and Anastasia Kugakolova remain undefeated with their victory over Tsitsi Masviba and Claudia Strauss at the top spot, 8-5. Polina Kokoulina and Magdi Rekasi defeated Suzanne Jones and Nicole Shaw, 8-3, on court two. Also undefeated, Hayley Rudman and Tarryn Rudman shutout Shamiaa Elsisi and Christina Mancheno in an 8-0 decision at No. 3.
In singles action, Tarryn Rudman won the first singles point of the match, defeating Elsisi, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3. Next, State's 26nd-ranked Fodor downed Strauss, 6-1, 6-2, on court one. Fodor moved to tied for fourth in the MSU record books for singles wins in a season. With her 26 wins, she is tied with Sue Thomson's 26 wins during the 1985-86 season.
Clinching the match, Hayley Rudman won at No. 6 over Luz Garcia, 6-2, 6-3. Kokoulina defeated Troy's Jones, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3. At the second spot, Kugakolova was the next Lady Bulldog to record a victory, downing Masviba in a 6-3, 6-4 decision. Renée Joseph won her first set with Mancheno at the fifth position in a tiebreaker, 7-6(2). Sealing the shutout for the squad, Joseph took the second set 6-4.
Next, MSU begins Southeastern Conference play against the Wildcats of Kentucky in Lexington on Fri., Mar. 4. The match is slated to start at 3 p.m. E.T.
