Wilson Sets Collegiate-Best In Shot Put On Day Two Of SEC Indoor Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The Mississippi State University women's indoor track and field team wrapped up the second day of competition at the 2005 Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships with sophomore Nicola Wilson setting a collegiate-best mark in the shot put and junior Jennifer McPherson qualifying for Sunday's mile run final. The event is being held at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track Complex on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
"The big chance for us is in the mile with Jennifer (McPherson)," said MSU head coach Al Schmidt. "Hopefully, she can finish leading the conference with a win tomorrow. The distance medley relay is tomorrow, as well. We're hoping to come through there."
Wilson finished in 10th place, just two spots shy of scoring team points. Her throw of 45-1 3/4 was a collegiate-best for the Trenton, N.J.-native. The mark ranks fourth on MSU's all-Time Superlatives list and is the best mark posted on the team this season.
McPherson, competing in her first race since injuring her Achilles, finished sixth overall in the preliminaries of the mile with a time of 5 minutes. 00.29 seconds. She will attempt to retain her No. 1 spot in the conference in tomorrow's final scheduled for 1:25 p.m. CT.
Other Saturday competitors for MSU included junior Zita Magloire in the 800-meter run prelims, freshman Angelica Phillips in the 200 and 400-meter dash prelims, freshman Dominique Rogers in the 200-meter dash prelims, and junior Lauren Johnson and freshman Alexandra Rozefort in the long jump.
On Friday, junior Lauren Johnson finished eighth in the pentathlon. The Scottsboro, Ala.-native's 3,558 points is a collegiate-best in the event and ranks No. 3 on the MSU all-Time Superlatives list.
Women's action resumes Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with the 20-lb weight throw.
