Walls Closes Out 2005 SEC Indoor Championships For Lady Bulldogs With A Collegiate-Best
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -?€” The Mississippi State University women's indoor track and field team finished competition at the 2005 Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships on Sunday afternoon with junior Jasmine Walls setting a collegiate-best in the high jump, clearing 5-7. The event was held at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track Complex on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
"This is a young but promising squad," said MSU Head Coach Al Schmidt. "Our injuries devastated us. I think we lost one-third of our team to that alone. The girls tried hard, and we had some good performances. We're disappointed."
The Picayune, Miss.-native's 5-7 mark was good enough for eighth place and ranks No. 3 on the MSU all-Time Superlatives list.
"The coaches have helped out a lot of support," said Walls. "I had a lot of confidence, and I just got it done."
In the mile run, junior Jennifer McPherson finished third in 4 minutes, 56.08 seconds in only her second race back from a nagging Achilles injury.
State's distance medley relay team of junior Zita Magloire, freshman Dominique Rogers, freshman Andrea Wahlin, and McPherson also competed on the final day of competition. Seniors Crystal Averitt and Jennifer Johnstone made appearances in the 20-lb. weight throw, as well.
State shifts gears toward the 2005 outdoor season, which gets underway Friday in Tallahassee. The MSU men's team will be competing at the FSU Snowbird, hosted by Florida State University.
