MSU Golfers Eighth After First Round Of Conrad Rehling

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?€“ Mississippi State's men's golf team battled through tough weather conditions to shoot a 312 on the opening day of the Conrad Rehling Invitational at Ol' Colony Golf Complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Bulldogs currently sit in a three-way tie for eighth in the 13-team field. MSU is just 13 strokes off the pace set by Michigan State, who opened with a 299, and eight shots out of third place.
State was led by Joe Deraney's three-over-par 75. The senior from Statesboro, Ga. opened the front nine with a 39, but bounced back to fire a 36 on the back. He stands in a six-way tie for 12th on the individual leaderboard. The Maroon and White got a solid round from sophomore Greg Huxman, who posted a five-over-par 77. The Miami, Fla. product heads into the second round of competition tied for 21st in the field.
Joe (Deraney) did not hit the ball that well today, but he did a good job on the back nine to finish strong, said MSU head coach Clay Homan. He is still in the hunt with the leader shooting 70.
Sophomore Josh Oller and senior Tim Satow both shot 80 in the opening 18 holes. Junior Jared Jimenez closed out the MSU scorecard with an 83.
The average score on the opening day was a 78.75. Georgia State's Steve Tiley was the only competitor to card a round under par. He fired a two-under-par 70 to take a two-shot lead into Saturday's play.
The Panthers of GSU are in the clubhouse in second place, followed by Alabama, UAB and Mississippi to round out the top-five teams.
Saturday's second round will get under way at 8 a.m. CT with groups teeing off from No. 1 and No. 10. The Alabama Golf Association will provide live scoring of the event at www.bamagolf.com.
