MSU Golfers In Second After 36 Holes At Homewood Suites Invitational

MOBILE, Ala. ?€“ The Mississippi State men's golf team stands in second place after two rounds at the Homewood Suites Invitational in Mobile, Ala. State registered rounds of 281 and 282. They are currently two stokes back of the clubhouse leader South Alabama at three-under-par at the par-72 Azalea City Golf Course.
Senior Joe Deraney is in contention to capture his first individual crown of his career. The Statesboro, Ga. product posted rounds of 69 and 70 and stands second on the individual leaderboard. He is two strokes off the lead held by Louisiana Tech's Derek Busby. Senior Tim Satow and sophomore Josh Oller finished the first two rounds at even par. Satow recorded a three-over-par 75 to start the day, but rallied in the afternoon session to post a three-under-par 69. Oller carded rounds of 73 and 71. Both players head in to the final round in the 14th position.
We played really well in the second round. We had three guys shoot rounds of under par, said MSU head coach Clay Homan. Tim (Satow) really stepped up with a 69 in the second round and Joe (Deraney) shot 70 without recording a bogey.
Freshman Michael Knight fired rounds of 75 and 72 and ranks 30th in the individual standings. Jake Lambert rounded out the State scorecard with scores of 75 and 74 on Monday. Matt Mooney, who is competing as an individual, finished day one of the event with rounds of 78 and 77.
The guys are playing well enough to win, but we have to go out there and get it done, said Homan. Today was a team effort and that is what it is going to take for us to win.
Austin Peay State is two strokes back in third place, while Louisiana Tech and New Orleans round out the top-five in the 13-team field.
The tournament will conclude on Tuesday with the final 18 holes. Play will begin at 8 a.m. at the Azalea City Golf Course.
