Team Results
MOBILE, Ala. ?€“ Mississippi State's men's golf team captured the team title at the Homewood Suites Invitational in Mobile, Ala. on Tuesday at the par-72 Azalea City Golf Club. The Bulldogs fired the low-round of the day of 289 to finish the 54-hole event at two-under par. MSU entered the final round two strokes behind South Alabama. The host team fired a final round 296 to finish second in the 13-team field.
The tournament victory is the first for State since the 1999 Furman Intercollegiate.
These kids have never tasted winning on the collegiate level, said MSU head coach Clay Homan. They are excited about winning. It was a team effort today, the kids hung in there with the tough pin placements today.
Senior Joe Deraney won the individual crown in a playoff over Louisiana Tech's Derek Busby. The Statesboro, Ga. native fired a final round one-under par 71 to make the playoff. The turning point in the round was his eagle putt on No. 15. He made par on the first hole of the playoff for his first collegiate win. The win by Deraney marked the first time a Bulldog linkster brought home a tournament championship since Codie Mudd won the 2002 LSU Spring Invitational.
I can't say enough about this team, said Joe Deraney. Jake (Lambert) birdied three of his last four holes and (Josh) Oller had a 70. It was an all around good effort this week, said Deraney. Hopefully, we can take this win and build on it.
Sophomore Josh Oller recorded a round of 70 to finish fifth in the field. Jake Lambert carded a 73, while senior Tim Satow and freshman Michael Knight each registered a 75 on the final day. Satow finished 16th and Knight placed 29th. Senior Matt Mooney competed as an individual, finishing 63th with rounds of 78,77 and 78.
Josh's (Oller) 70 was important and Jake (Lambert) played as consistent as anybody, said Homan. Joe's (Deraney) win is well deserved. He played really solid today.
The Maroon and White defeated eight Southeast District teams in the field. Austin Peay finished third, while Louisiana Tech and Southern Mississippi rounded out the top five.
State returns to competition on April 1-3 in the LSU Spring Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
