Steinberg, Carvalho Named Mississippi State Nominees For McWhorter Post-Graduate Scholarship
The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarshiphas been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to theleague's top male and female scholar-athletes.
The Southeastern Conference will name the 2005 recipients of theH. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 6in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day.
Steinberg, a senior from Mandeville, La., has a 4.00 grade pointaverage with a double major in International Business and French.Since her enrollment at State in 2001, Steinberg has earned President'sScholar and Bulldog Honor Roll mention in every semester and is athree-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. She is a member ofSociety of Scholars in the Arts and Sciences and has earned the Collegeof Business and Industry Scholarship at MSU. She is a member of theBeta Gamma Sigma National Business Honor Society, the Pi Delta PhiFrench National Honor Society and the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.
In 2003, Steinberg won the Walt Newsom Award as the topstudent-athlete for women's track at State and in 2003-04; she won theDavid M. Halbrook Award for the top female student-athlete in the stateof Mississippi. She is a pole vaulter on the Lady Bulldog track squad.Her career bests are a 8-10 1/4 indoor vault at the 2005 LSU BayouBengal Meet and an 8-10 1/4 outdoor vault at the 2004 BulldogInvitational. Both marks rank in the Mississippi State track & fieldrecord books.
Steinberg is the current president of the M-Club, MississippiState's student-athlete letterwinner's community service organization.She is an MSU College of Business and Industry Ambassador, a member ofthe MSU Pathfinders Program, the International Business Club, theAthletic Council, the MSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and theNCAA Academic Integrity Committee.
Carvalho, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, has a 3.52 gradepoint average with a double major in Journalism/Public Relations andSpanish. He is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, amember of the President's List at State and has earned Scholar-Athletestatus from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for two seasons. Heis a two-time Mississippi State Student-Athlete of the Week and hasearned the Earl Love Guyton Scholarship from the school's CommunicationsDepartment.
On the court, Carvalho is a four-year letterwinner and serves asa team captain this season. He has combined for more than 110 winsduring his career and in 2004, was a doubles semifinalist at the ITAAll-American Championships. He has participated in three NCAA TeamChampionships, including helping MSU to the round of 16 in 2001, and wasthe SEC Tennis Player of the Week in February 2004. He has been rankedin the top 10 nationally in doubles by the ITA this season.
As the MSU Athletic Department's representative on the SEC'sStudent-Athlete Advisory Committee, Carvalho was a participant in the2004 NCAA Regional Leadership Conference, is a member of the M-Club anda member of the Lambda Pi Eta Communications Honor Society. He wasnamed to the 2004 SEC Good Works Team for his community service work,including visiting elementary schools and working on food and clothingdrives. He also sponsors a child through the "Children International"program.

National Student-Athlete Day was created in 1987 by theNational Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and NortheasternUniversity's Center for the Study of Sport in Society, and presented bythe National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and the NationalFederation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
National Student-Athlete Day is held each April 6 to celebrateoutstanding student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academicsand athletics while having made significant contributions to thecommunity. It is also a time to recognize those parents, teachers,coaches and school systems which make it possible for young people tofind the balance between academics and athletics.
Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with ALLTEL, an SEC CorporatePartner, provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-AthletePost-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $10,000 post-graduatescholarship. The 22 remaining male and female finalists for the awardwill also receive a $5,000 post-graduate scholarship. The awardrecipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty AthleticsRepresentatives from the 12 SEC institutions and are honored at the SECSpring Meetings in Sandestin, Fla. on June 2.
Last year's recipients were Alabama soccer player Lauren Imwalleand Auburn diver Caesar Garcia.
