New Mississippi State head football coach Sylvester Croom did not have to look far to fill one position on his first Bulldog coaching staff. Croom was well aware of Stan Drayton's coaching abilities, having watched his professional devlopment when both were with the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League.
Drayton, 32, came to MSU from the Packers, where he spent the previous three seasons as the organization's offensive quality control and assistant special teams coach. In that capacity, he assisted the Packer offensive staff with tape breakdown and practice preparation. He also assisted with Green Bay's special teams units and scout team assignments.
While on the staff of the Packers, Drayton and Croom helped the team to three straight National Football Conference divisional playoff appearances.
Prior to joining the Packer organization, Drayton worked eight years in the college coaching ranks. Immediately before joining the NFL club, he spent five months as the running backs and special teams coach at Bowling Green (Ohio) State University, working with the Falcons before accepting his Green Bay assignment. He earlier served as an assistant coach at Villanova University from 1996-2000, after three one-year stints at the University of Pennsylvania (1995), Eastern Michigan (1994) and Allegheny College (1993).
While coaching the running backs at Villanova, Drayton helped the Wildcats reach the 1996 and '97 NCAA Division I-AA playoffs, with the latter club advancing through the playoff system to a national title.
In 1998, Drayton coached then-sophomore running back Brian Westbrook to a record-breaking season. Under Drayton's guidance, Westbrook set a Division I-AA all-purpose yardage record and became the first player at any college level to record more than 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in the same season. Drayton groomed the two-time all-America to a third-round selection by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2001 draft. In 1999, Drayton was nominated for the American Football Coaches' Association Assistant Coach of the Year Award. In his first season at Villanova, Drayton helped Curtis Sifford become the first running back in school history to top the 1,000-yard rushing plateau. He also coached the school's special teams and coordinated the football program's recruiting efforts.
Before coaching at Villanova, Drayton spent the '95 season at Penn as the director of football operations and running backs assistant. In '94, he worked as a graduate assistant at Eastern Michigan of the Mid-American Conference, working with the running backs and wide receivers. He launched his coaching career in 1993 at his alma mater, Allegheny College, where he tutored the running backs.
A three-year starter as a running back at Allegheny, Drayton was a three-time, first-team all-America selection and an Associated Press Little All-America first-team member. Allegheny's all-time leading rusher and scorer, he was a member of the 1990 NCAA Division III national championship team. He holds the Division III single-season record for touchdowns scored per game. Drayton was a two-time all-America in track and field as well, competing in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
The Cleveland, Ohio, native earned his bachelor's degree in English from Allegheny College in 1993. He is married to the former Adriane Fuller of Detroit, Mich.
