Bulldogs Send Three To 400m Finals At MidEast Regional
Day One Results
BATON ROUGE, La. -? Mississippi State University's Jamel Ashley, LaChristopher Lewis and Arthur Davis advanced to the finals of the 400m dash on Friday at the 2004 MidEast Regional Championships in Baton Rouge, La., at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
Ashley ran a personal best time of 45.56 in the 400m for second in the prelims. Lewis took sixth with a time of 46.03, and Davis also recorded a career best time with his 46.36, finishing in eighth.
"We have got three guys in the finals of the 400m, which is huge to have that many guys in an NCAA Regional final," said head coach Al Schmidt. "LaChristopher solidified his trip to nationals in the long jump. Tiffany looked a little rusty in the 1500m, but she came back and ran a great 800m. Jennifer getting in the finals of the 1500m is big. We are all set up for tomorrow."
Lewis earned a trip to the NCAA National Championships with his 25-0 3/4 in the long jump, taking fourth place. Kendall Pyant II recorded a 16-7 in the long jump. Matt Denton scored points for the Bulldogs with a seventh place showing in the high jump, leaping 6-9.
Davis recorded a 21.09 in the prelims of the 200m. The 4x100m relay team of Eloitt Morant, Ashley, Davis and Lewis took tenth in the prelims in 40.46, missing the finals by two-hundredths of a second.
In the throwing events, Matt Whalen set a personal best mark with his 55-9 1/4 in the shot put for 14th place. JD Erickson recorded a 51-1 in the shot put, and Matt Holcomb threw the hammer 181-5.
Lady Bulldog Tiffany McWilliams advanced to the finals of the 800m and 1500m, winning the prelims in each event. She recorded a MidEast Regional Meet Record in the 800m with her time of 2:02.27. In the 1500m, she ran a 4:16.42. Jennifer McPherson also advanced to the finals of the 1500m with her tenth place showing, recording a time of 4:27.03. Zita Magloire set a career best mark with her 2:09.65 performance in the 800m. In the discus, Crystal Averitt threw 142-5.
