State Tracksters Set For Mideast Regional AT LSU
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State University men's and women's track and field teams travel to Baton Rouge, La., for the 2004 MidEast Regional Championships on Friday, May 28. The two-day event is being held at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium on the campus of LSU.
The Lady Bulldogs have four athletes competing in three events. MSU's Tiffany McWilliams will be running the 800m with teammate Zita Magloire. Jennifer McPherson and McWilliams will compete in the 1500m run. McWilliams will be defending her 2003 title in the 1500m and runner-up status last season in the 800m. State's record holder in the discus, Crystal Averitt will display her talents in the event on Friday.
On the men's side, 12 athletes will compete in nine events and two relays. Arthur Davis will run the 200m and 400m, and Jamel Ashley will run the 400m. LaChristopher Lewis is slated for the 400m, finishing fourth in 2003, and long jump. Freshman Travis McKay will run the 3000m steeplechase for the squad.
In the jumping events, Matt Denton will compete in the high jump, Kendall Pyant II in the long jump and Trey Hardee in the pole vault. Hardee has previously qualified for the NCAA Championships in the decathlon. JD Erickson will throw the shot put and discus. Matt Whalen will also compete in the shot put, and Matt Holcomb will throw the hammer.
MSU's 4x100m squad of Eliott Morant, Ashley, Davis and Lewis will race on Friday and the 4x400m team of Ashley, Davis, Keston Nelson and Lewis will race on Saturday evening.
