McWilliams Wins Two SEC Championship Titles

OXFORD, Miss. -- ? Mississippi State University's Tiffany McWilliams added two more Southeastern Conference Championship titles to her list of achievements, increasing her number to five, by defending her 2003 titles in the 1500m and 800m. She took top honors in the 1500m run in a SEC meet record and Ole Miss Track and Field Complex record time of 4:09.19, more than four seconds faster than her prelim time. Less than an hour and a half later, she won the 800m in 2:01.96. She was less than a second away from breaking the SEC meet record she set on Friday in the 800m prelims.
"We ran the men's 4x400m in 3:03.42," said head coach Al Schmidt. "We were leading most of the race, and we ran a great race. Tiffany also had a super weekend. LaChris had a phenomenal meet. The men finished seventh and we are getting better on the women's side. Now, we just need to keep working hard."
The men's team finished seventh overall with 42 points, and the Lady Bulldogs took 11th with 22 points.
LaChristopher Lewis finished fifth in the 400m with a personal best time of 45.73, also a regional qualifying time. Just over an hour later, he took fourth in the 200m dash in a regional qualifying time of 20.88. Setting a personal best time, Jamel Ashley took fifth in the 100m dash in a regional qualifying time of 10.49.
Ashley, Arthur Davis, Keston Nelson and Lewis finished second in the 4x400m relay in a season best time of 3:03.42, the second fastest time in MSU history. The women's 4x400m relay team of Kia James, Nicole Dunn, Zita Magloire and Jennifer McPherson finished ninth in the event with a season best time of 3:47.65.
Matt Denton leapt 6-8 3/4 in the high jump for a fourth place showing, scoring five points for the Bulldogs. JD Erickson scored a point for the Bulldogs in the discus with a regional qualifying distance of 169-3. Jerald Wilson recorded a mark of 44-8 3/4 in the triple jump for a ninth place showing.
Lady Bulldogs Michelle Kinney and Jennifer Johnstone both hit personal best marks in the javelin, finishing seventh and ninth. Kinney scored points for the squad with a 122-4, and Johnstone recorded a 120-4.
Gedamu Ege set a career best mark in the 5000m run with a time of 14:59.73.
