McWilliams Breaks SEC Record In 800M Run
Women's Results
OXFORD, Miss. -- Mississippi State University's Tiffany McWilliams broke the Southeastern Conference record with her 2:01.00 performance in the prelims of the 800m on Friday at the 2004 SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Oxford, Miss. She broke the SEC record set in 1984 by Tennessee's Joetta Clark. She also set a new school record, a new Ole Miss Track and Field Complex record, a new personal best time and a regional qualifying mark. She will run in the finals of the event Sunday evening.
"Tiffany breaking an SEC record in the prelims like that is unreal," said head coach Al Schmidt. "She should be leading the country with that time. Right now, Trey has got a shot at winning the decathlon because Auburn's Maurice Smith no-heighted in the pole vault. Trey just has to clear a height in the morning. If he gets the height cleared, he is pretty much in control. LaChris making the 200m finals was great for us. We were a little disappointed that we did not get another person in though."
Due to inclement weather, the men's decathlon was not completed. The postponement came during the decathlon pole vault. The conclusion of the event will begin at 10 a.m., and will be followed by the javelin and 1500m. When the pole vault was postponed, Trey Hardee had yet to make an attempt at a height. He did compete in the 110m hurdles and the discus, finishing second in both events. He recorded a time of 14.78 for 876 points in the 110m hurdles and a distance of 137-7 in the discus for 704 points.
LaChristopher Lewis finished tied for seventh in the 200m dash with his time of 21.28, advancing him to the finals on Sunday. Freshman Ryan Irwin set a career best time in the 800m with a 1:51.01. Matt Holcomb threw the hammer 168-2 for a 13th place showing.
On the women's side, Zita Magloire qualified for regionals in the 800m with her personal best time of 2:10.24. Christina Hernandez also set a career best mark throwing a 142-2 in the hammer.
The men's and women's 400-meter hurdles were also postponed and will be run Saturday afternoon with the women's race taking place at 2 p.m., followed by the men's at 2:15 p.m.
