Hardee In Second After Day One Of Decathlon At SEC Championships
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State University's sophomore Trey Hardee sits in second place in the decathlon at the 2004 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Oxford, Miss. After five events, he recorded a total of 3,994 points, two points behind the leader Maurice Smith of Auburn. The Championships are being held at the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex.
"I didn't want to come out and put everything into the first event," said Hardee. "I just tried to stay relaxed throughout. I didn't run what I wanted to in any event but the 400m. I have great coaches, and they helped me stay calm and focused throughout this first day. The way I finished (in the last two events) is what I needed heading into tomorrow's events. I had not been pleased with my performance until the high jump, and that momentum helped me in the 400m. To end on those two good notes is great."
Hardee finished first in the 100m in 10.68 for 933 points. In his second event, he recorded a mark of 22-7 in the long jump for 785 points, finishing in second. He throw the shot put 40-6 1/4 for 628 points and a sixth place showing.
Recording personal best marks in his final two events, he leapt 6-5 in the high jump and ran the 400m dash in 48.59. In the high jump, he earned 767 points, tying for third, and 881 points in the 400m dash for first place.
