MSU Tracksters Set For SEC Championships
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State University men's and women's track and field teams travel to Oxford, Miss., for the 2004 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track Championships on May 13. The four-day event will be held at the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex.
"We are as ready as we have ever been going into this championship," said head coach Al Schmidt.
State looks to qualify more athletes for the NCAA Regionals coming up at the end of May. The men's team has qualified 16 athletes in 10 events and eight relay teams in two events. On the women's side, Tiffany McWilliams has recorded regional qualifying marks in three events, the 800m, 1500m and mile run. Jennifer McPherson has qualified in the 1500m run and Crystal Averitt in the discus.
In 2003, MSU won four individual championships. Marquis Davis won the 100m dash with a time of 10.13 and the 200m dash with a 20.50. McWilliams took top honors in the 800m run with a 2:02.74 and the 1500m with a 4:12.17. The Bulldogs finished eighth overall as a team, and the Lady Bulldogs finished 10th.
