"The women's DMR didn't run the way we wanted to, but it was still a good time," said Schmidt. "Travis qualifying for regionals made it a great night and Joy ran her second best time ever. We feel pretty good about today."
In the women's throwing events, Freshman Nicola Wilson took seventh in the shot put with a throw of 45-10 3/4. Crystal Averitt recorded a 146-1 in the discus throw for 11th place and a 163-2 in the hammer, finishing in 14th-place.
The Lady Bulldog distance medley team of Jennifer McPherson, Nicole Dunn, Zita Magloire and Tiffany McWilliams took seventh in the race with a time of 11:17.46.
Setting a personal best, Joy Griffith improved her time in the 5000m by 19 seconds with her 17:26.10 performance in the event. Travis McKay also set a personal best time recording a regional qualifying time of 9:06.75 in the 3000m steeplechase championship race, besting his former time by seven seconds.
Day two begins for MSU with the men's shot put and discus throws.
