MSU Netter Carvalho Named To SEC Good Works Team
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State men's tennis player Luiz Carvalho has been named to the 2004 Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Good Works Team, released by the SEC office Tuesday.
Carvalho, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, has been very involved in community activities during his career. He is member of the Mississippi State M-Club. As a part of that organization, he reads books for elementary students in the Starkville Public School system, donates funding for the purchase of materials and books for those schools, and picks up litter around the State campus and in the Starkville area. He is also a sponsor for a child in South America through an adopt-a-child program.
In 2003-04, he has served as the Mississippi State athletic department's student-athlete representative for the SEC's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Majoring in communication with a journalism/public relations emphasis, he was an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete in 2003 and also earned Academic all-SEC honors last season. An MSU President's Scholar as well, he is a member of Lambda Pi Eta (communication honor society).
On the court, Carvalho has played at #1 doubles and #2-3 singles for the Bulldogs this season. He has clinched two of State's wins this year and was named the SEC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the first week of the 2004 season, based on his play in the Bulldogs' wins over Auburn and Alabama. He holds career records of 47-43 in singles and 45-45 in doubles.
