Bulldogs Finish 10th At SEC Championships
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Mississippi State carded a final-round 288 on Sunday to move up a two spot in the standings, finishing 10th in the 2004 Southeastern Conference Championships in St. Simons Island, Ga. at Sea Island Golf Club. The finish by the Bulldogs was the best since the 2000 season.
MSU's 288 on Sunday was the second-best round of the year.
State's highlight of the day was turned in by junior Joe Deraney, who moved up 21 spots to 22nd on Sunday after firing a career-low 66 on final 18 holes. His four under-par score tied for low-round of the day with Kentucky's Matt Kohn. The last time an MSU golfer fired a round that low was by Codie Mudd in 2001 at the Rice Intercollegiate.
Deraney was on pace for a 64 on the par-70 course, but found some trouble on the last two holes.
"Joe (Deraney) played a flawless round up until No. 17," said MSU head coach Clay Homan. "He showed today why he is the leader of the team," said Homan.
Tim Satow tied his career-best in the final round with a one-over-par 71 and a 25th -place showing. The Durban, South Africa native carded a 71 in the opening round of the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate last weekend. Satow had a stretch of four birdies in a row on the back nine. Freshman Greg Huxman finished the tournament in 37th. Daniel Boles finished up the Bulldog's scorecard with a 76.
"Tim (Satow) had a great tournament. He was able to put three good rounds together," said Homan.
Georgia captured the 2004 title with a three over-par 843. They finished one-stoke ahead of defending SEC Champion Florida. UGA's Todd Brendon took home the individual title with a three under-par tournament score.
