Women's Golf In Tie For Ninth After First Day At SEC Championship

"We are just 14 strokes out of the lead with 36 holes left to play," MSU coach Christi Sanders said. "We still feel like we have a good shot, despite the mistakes we made today. We overcame them today and will improve upon them for the rest of the tournament."
Junior Beth Irwin leads State in a sixth place tie after the first day. Irwin fired a season-low of 73, tying her previous score from the Lady Pirate Fall Intercollegiate. Sophomores Ashleigh Korzack and Stephanie Godare are tied for 27th with a first round score of 76. The opening day score tied Godare's career-low and set a new first round career-low for the Houston native. Janet Dyer is tied for 53rd with a score of 81 and freshman Amanda Mathis is three strokes back of Dyer in 58th.
"Beth had a solid round today. She is striking the ball well right now. Stephanie is playing well and has really got confidence in her golf swing," Sanders said. "It was nice to see Ashleigh play well today too."
Defending tournament champion Auburn leads the field with an opening day score of 292. Vanderbilt is in second with a score of 295, while Tennessee is one stroke back of the Commodores in third. Tennessee's Violeta Retamoza leads in the individual standings firing a three under par, 69 in the opening round. Arkansas' Amanda McCurdy is two strokes back of Retamoza with a 71. Defending tournament medalist Aimee Cho of Florida and Auburn's Nicole Hage and Maria Martinez are tied for third with an even par score of 72.
The second round of the SEC Championship is set for Saturday, April 17 with the final round concluding on Sunday, April 18. Each round will begin at 8:30 a.m. Live stats for the championship are available at www.golfstat.com.
