Scottsboro High School's McGee Signs With Bulldog Track Team
"Will is another good distance runner out of the state of Alabama, as we continue the push to get the best distance runners out of Mississippi and Alabama," said Dudley. "He adds another piece of the puzzle to the men's cross country side to eventually win a National Championship."
Holding 20 all-State honors, McGee has helped the Wildcats of Scottsboro High School to two Cross Country State Championships, four Indoor State Championships and two Outdoor State Championships. In 2003, his team won the Triple Crown of track, winning state titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, and are on pace to win it again with the 2004 Outdoor State Championships on April 30-May 1.
"Signing with Mississippi State was an opportunity that I could not pass up," said McGee. "I am really looking forward to running with the guys. I really enjoyed the guys, the coaches and the environment. I feel that MSU is the best possible place for me to be a part of a National Championship team."
In a span of six days, McGee has set personal best marks in the outdoor 1600m, 3200m and two-mile run. At the Mobile Meet of Champions on April 3, McGee took second in 3200m with his time of 9:24.84 and fifth in the two-mile with a 9:28.14. He ran the 1600m on April 9, at the Mountain Brook Invitational in 4:20.51 for a fourth place showing.
His indoor personal best marks in the 1600m and 3200m were recorded at the 2004 Alabama High School Athletic Association Indoor State Championships. He recorded a time of 4:27.44 for sixth in the indoor 1600m and a 9:35.94 in the 3200m for fourth. McGee's cross country personal best time is 16:08.30 set at the 2002 Alabama Cross Country Sectionals.
Off the track, he is a member of the Mentorship Program at SHS, where high school students mentor to elementary students, and an officer with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
McGee plans to work towards a degree in biology with aspirations of becoming a dentist.
