Atlanta's Woods Signs With MSU Track Team
"The signing of Chris Woods gives us a High School all-American performer in the 800 meters, a void that we need filled," said Dudley. "He will help better position us in the SEC, as well as nationally."
Woods is the United States record holder in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.78, recorded at the 2002 USATF National Championships in the Intermediate 15-16 year-old boys. However, his personal best in the 800m is 1:52.64. He finished fourth at the 2002 USATF National Championship in the 400m hurdles with his career best time of 54.32.
"I'm very excited about going to Mississippi State," said Woods. "I know that Coach Dudley can help enhance my performance on the track and academically. I am just really ready to work with some of the best athletes. I'm really excited about attending the university."
In 2003, Woods was undefeated in every 800m race he competed and was honored with the Best Performance Award in the 800m. He also was honored as the 2003 Atlanta Track Man of the Year and ranks in the top five nationally in Summer Track. He broke the record in the 800m at the East Coast Blunt Invitational in the Intermediate Boys Division with his time of 1:55.01 in 2003.
He currently holds the fastest 800m time, 1:54.54, ever recorded in Georgia and his 4x800m relay team ranks second in Georgia with an 8:07.19. Woods and his Raider teammates have won eight straight city championships and three straight regional championships.
He was also recognized by Who's Who Among American Athletes as a student and with his academics. Woods is a classmate of De'Mon Glanton and Corey Spells who both signed with MSU's football team for the 2004 season.
