MSU's Deraney Finishes 23rd At Billy Hitchcock
AUBURN, Ala. -- Mississippi State junior golfer Joe Deraney finished tied for 23rd at the 17th annual Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate in Auburn, Ala. on Sunday. He fired a one over-par 73 on the final day to post a three-day total of 219. Deraney has now been State's top-finisher in seven of MSU's 10 tournaments.
The Maroon and White struggled for the third consecutive day at Saugahatchee Country Club. The Bulldogs carded a 306 on the final 18 holes, finishing 12th.
Junior Daniel Boles recorded his best round of the 54-hole event on Sunday with a 76. Carl Sutton posted a 78, while freshman Jake Lambert finished with a 79. Tim Satow rounded out the scoring with an 81 and finishing 52nd.
The Auburn Tigers held on to their 36-hole lead, shooting a final-round 291 to finish five strokes ahead of runner-up Jacksonville State. Memphis, Georgia State and Texas A&M rounded out the top-five in the team standings.
First round-leader Nick Mackay of Jacksonville State turned in a three under-par 69 to win individual honors by two strokes over Auburn's Jonathan Dismuke, who led after 36 holes.
The Bulldogs close out the 2004 campaign with a trip to Sea Island, Ga. for the Southeastern Conference Championship April 16-18.
