MSU Completes First Week Of Spring Football
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State finished its first week of spring practice Saturday, a fourth straight day of work to open this off-season, and the string of two and one-half hour drills seemed to have taken its toll on the team.
"They dragged a little bit at the end," Bulldog head football coach Sylvester Croom said. "But I expected that would happen. It was their fourth straight day, their first in (shoulder) pads, and their first with any kind of contact. It was a little warmer today and we went a little longer, but I liked the way they stayed after it. That was good."
Donning the shoulder pads for the first time allowed the linemen to work on one-on-one drills, and the head coach was pleased with the contact.
"I thought both sides were physical; I liked the aggressiveness," Croom said.
The team worked for a second straight day in Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field as its practice fields behind the Shira Athletic Complex were covered with track athletes competing at the Bulldog Invitational.
The initial four Bulldogs who entered spring either sidelined or restricted due to injury rehabilitation grew by one when wide receiver Jason Husband (Jackson, Miss.) could not participate Saturday from a turf toe injury incurred on Friday. Offensive guard Donovan Davis (Jackson, Miss.) missed most of Saturday's work after sustaining a sprained arch.
After four straight practice days to open the spring, the Bulldogs will get two days of rest before returning to work Tuesday in full pads.
