Memphis Wins Match Over Mississippi State At Old Waverly
Junior Daniel Boles finished tied for third in the 36-hole event
WEST POINT, Miss. -- The Tigers of Memphis fired a two-round total of 587 to out dual Mississippi State in a match played at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss. Tuesday. MSU turned in a score of 610 on the day.
Memphis now leads the all-time series with MSU 2-0 in dual match play. The two schools first squared off in match play during the 1976 campaign.
The Bulldogs opened the match with a first round score of 311. Jared Jimenez carded the low-round of the opening 18 holes with a 74. He recorded three birdies on the back nine. Daniel Boles carded a 77 in the first round, the Meridian, Miss. native followed up with an even par 72 to post a 36-hole score of 149 and a third-place finish. His second round score was the third-lowest in the two-round event. Joe Deraney rebounded from an 82 in the first round to card a two over-par 75 in the final round.
State fired a team-total 292 in the second round; while UM was seven strokes better at 292.
I think the most positive thing that came out of today was that we had a lot of players get some tournament competition, said head coach Clay Homan.
Tim Satow and Carl Sutton, competing as individuals, finished fourth and 10th respectively in the 20-player field. Satow had two rounds of 75, while Sutton finished with a 75 and 79. Matt Mooney saw his first tournament action in the Maroon and White. Mooney had a two-round total of 161.
Memphis's Alan Weant finished first the match, shooting two rounds in red figures. He opened the day with a three under-par 69 in the first round and followed that with a 71. Richard Jones of Memphis finished six shots back of his teammate with two rounds of 73.
The Bulldogs jump back in to tournament play on April 2-4 in the LSU Spring Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
