A seasoned veteran of more than 30 years coaching offensive linemen or tight ends at some of the nation's premier football programs, Terry Lewis enters his third season on the Bulldog staff coaching the offensive tackles and tight ends.
Lewis made the move to Starkville and his 11th collegiate coaching position after serving three years on the football coaching staff at the University of North Carolina where he coached the Tar Heel tight ends. The three-year stint was his second tour of duty in Chapel Hill, having also coached Carolina from 1988-91.
Prior to going to UNC the most recent time, he spent six years at the University of Colorado, where he coached three Buffalo all-America linemen on the staffs of Bill McCartney and Rick Neuheisel. During his time in Boulder, the Buffaloes compiled a 53-16-2 overall record during his tenure.
He was also responsible for tutoring CU's 1994 offensive line that opened holes for Rashaan Salaam as he went on to win the Heisman Trophy and led Colorado to an 11-1 record and a 41-24 win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.
During his time in the Rocky Mountains, Lewis helped mold offensive lines that paved the way for the Buffaloes to rush for 13,077 yards and 150 touchdowns in 71 games.
Lewis served on Mack Brown's staff at Tulane in 1987 before making the move to North Carolina with him on that initial assignment to Chapel Hill. Lewis had earlier worked on the collegiate level at LSU (1984-86), Navy (1972-74 and 1982-83), East Carolina (1981), Southern University (1979-80), Illinois (1977-78) and Western Michigan (1975-76) before his first tenure at North Carolina. Lewis began his coaching career at the United States Naval Academy Prep School in 1971.
He coached the tackles and tight ends at Carolina in 1988 and 1989 before taking over the offensive tackles solely for the 1990 and 1991 seasons. Lewis was the first assistant hired by Carl Torbush when the latter accepted the head coaching reins in 1997.
Over the course of his 31-year coaching career, the Memphis, Tenn., native has been on the sideline coaching in 10 postseason bowl games, including five contests played on New Year's Day.
Following a standout playing career at Southern University in which he earned four letters and all-America status, Lewis played with the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League in 1970.
